A complete or full denture is one that replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaws. A partial denture fills the spaces left by lost or missing teeth.
How a denture can help
As with other methods of replacing missing teeth dentures provide structure and support to the face and cheeks.
Modern techniques and materials mean that dentures can now be a far better fit, making eating and speaking much easier, and they also look far more natural then in the past.
Despite improvements over recent years, we should point out that, even the best dentures won’t feel the same as your natural teeth. They will take a bit of time to get used to, talking and eating will take a bit of practice.
The procedure for fitting dentures
We will examine your mouth to decide if dentures are suitable for you. It may be that some teeth will need to be extracted and/or you may need treatment to get your gums in to good condition first.
An impression of your gums will be taken. This will be given to the dental technician who will make your dentures to fit the exact contours of your mouth.
Like natural teeth, dentures can accumulate plaque and food debris, particularly in areas where the denture is in contact with the remaining teeth and gum. In addition to the usual oral hygiene measures like tooth brushing, dentures should be cleaned regularly. Poor denture hygiene can result in stains on the denture and a bad odour.
It is important that you visit your dentist to have your dentures and oral tissues evaluated yearly. Your dentures may need to be adjusted, relieved or even relined from time to time to ensure an optimal fit.
