Restoring Your Teeth in One Dental Appointment with CEREC
Whilst some people are more prone to tooth decay and stained teeth than others, we firmly believe that everyone deserves a healthy smile that they can be proud of. At some point, whether for cosmetic reasons or a functional need, the majority of us require restorative dental care to keep our teeth healthy and looking their best. Whilst some dental treatment can be time consuming, CEREC crowns can help provide a radiant smile in just one dental appointment.
What are CEREC one day crowns?
As well as being used for purely cosmetic reasons, crowns are commonly used to restore teeth that are damaged or decayed. If the top part of a tooth has been damaged, or the tooth is heavily decayed and not strong enough to be filled, a crown is an excellent solution. In some cases, a crown may also be needed after root canal treatment or if a bridge is being fitted, to strengthen the tooth or teeth.
Crowns are like a cap that covers your tooth to restore it to the right shape and appearance. They are made from strong, durable, natural looking materials and can be fitted very quickly. At Southview Dental Care, we use state-of-the-art CEREC technology, which allows us to carry out crown fittings in a single session, without the need for a temporary crown.
CEREC is an abbreviation of “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics”, is a computer-aided design and manufacturing system that uses a combination of a camera, computer and milling instrument in one machine. As a result, perfect crowns can be made directly in the dentist’s office, allowing for treatment to be completed in a single visit. This means that there’s no need for the lengthy process of sending a tooth mould to an external lab so that a crown can be made, and there’s no need for a temporary crown while you wait!
Here’s how CEREC works:
- Your tooth is prepared for restoration
- CEREC software scans your mouth and takes a digital photo of the treatment area
- CEREC technology then converts the image into a 3D model and the dentist is able to use the software to create the final restoration
- The CEREC mill then carves out the crown into a ceramic block, perfectly fitting the exact specifications of your restoration
- The dentist checks that the crown fits properly, then the crown is polished and bonded to your tooth
The entire process from restoration to fitting takes no more than a couple of hours.
As well as the fast treatment time, other benefits of CEREC one day crowns are that the technology is so precise that more of the healthy parts of your tooth can be saved and restorations are made to perfectly match your existing tooth colour, so your crowns will be completely unnoticeable.
Caring for your crowns
As with any crown, a CEREC crown is likely to feel a little strange for a few days after treatment. This is to be expected as it is unlikely to be exactly the same size as your original tooth (or teeth). This is something that you will quickly get used to, however, if it does continue to be uncomfortable, you should speak to your dentist, who will check the crown out for you.
To care for crowns, you should continue with your usual dental hygiene routine, making sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day. It’s also recommended that you arrange to see the hygienist regularly, as recommended by your dentist. Crowns are designed to last, so it’s vital that you care for them.
