Let's get back to basics with the 5 fundamental tips for maintaining a healthy mouth:
1Brush for 2 minutes twice a day: Although it may seem strange, we advise brushing your teeth first thing in the morning before breakfast. Use a small headed toothbrush and try to spend 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth, making sure you are cleaning all surfaces of your teeth and most importantly the region where your teeth meet the gum. It is best to have your brush angled at 45 degrees to the gum line, as this is proven to allow the most efficient cleaning of your gums.
2Use a fluoridated toothpaste: The vast majority of toothpastes contain fluoride which is the active ingredient that strengthens tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. However, some herbal toothpastes do not contain fluoride. This can lead to a higher likelihood of getting decay and needing dental treatment. Look for sodium fluoride in the toothpaste ingredients (usually1450 ppm F).
3Spit don't rinse: This may feel strange if you are used to rinsing your mouth after brushing your teeth, however, spitting instead allows the fluoride in the toothpaste to continue protecting your teeth for longer, this is of particular benefit at night.
4Limit sugar frequency: Whilst we are confined to the house it can be very easy to reach for a sugary snack or drink out of boredom or habit. Keeping your sugar intake frequency to a minimum, such as only after one meal a day, will dramatically reduce the chance of decay and the likelihood of you needing a filling.
5Limit acidic drinks: Acidic drinks in the form of fruit juice, carbonated (fizzy) drinks, sparkling wines etc., have the effect of dissolving the enamel of our teeth. As the enamel gets thinner it also becomes weaker and less resistant to decay. It also makes the appearance of your teeth visibly yellower. By removing more enamel, the naturally yellow dentine beneath shows through. Avoiding brushing your teeth after acidic drinks is important too, as abrasives in toothpaste can remove further enamel. Consider rinsing your mouth with water after such drinks and limit to drinking them at meal times.
